Today’s car is a 1971 Dodge Challenger R/T owned by Chuck. Chuck is the second owner of this car which he purchased in 1975 from his brother-in-law Jim. It is finished in Bright Red with Black accent strips and a Black vinyl top. It is powered by a 440cu in, 7.2 liter Magnum V8, with a Carter AFB 4-bbl carburetor, producing 375 hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and delivering that power to the rear wheels through a Sure Grip limited slip rear end with 3.55 to 1 gear ratio. Helping slow this baby down are 11 inch disc brakes in the front and 11 inch drum brakes in the rear. The front suspension is independent with heavy duty torsion bars, a sway bar and Oriflow shocks. The rear suspension is asymmetrical heavy duty semi-elliptical leaf springs with Oriflow shocks. Top speed was estimated at 132 mph and the 0-60 mph was 5.8 Seconds.
The original MSRP was $3,785.00. The total number of 1970 Dodge Challenger’s produced was 76,935 of which 13,796 were Challenger R/T’s of those 2,802 were R/T 440’s.
This original car is a great example of early 70’s muscle cars, This is a great car for Mopar car shows, Cars and Coffee events, or just cruising around town. Thanks for riding along. Frank
