Today’s car is a 1969 Mercury Cougar Convertible, Cobra Jet 428. It is finished in Dark Ivy Green Metallic with a Medium Saddle interior with a Black convertible top & boot. It is owned by Dann and Carole Allen. The car was originally ordered on April 14, 1969 and was built at the Dearborn, MI plant. I saw the car at the Marina del Rey, CA Cars and Coffee. It is powered by a 428 cu in, 7.0 liter, V8 with a Holley 4-bbl carburetor and producing 335 hp. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed close ratio manual transmission and delivering that power to the rear wheels through an Equa-Loc 3.50 to 1 gear ratio rear end. Helping slow this baby down are power disc brakes in the front and drum brakes in the rear.. The front suspension is a ball-joint type with coil springs mount on top of upper arms with strut-stabilized lower arms. The rear suspension is longitudinal semi elliptical springs with diagonally mounted shock absorbers. It is an asymmetrical, variable-rate design with the rear axle located forward of the spring centers for those anti-squat takeoffs.
The original MSRP was $3,3825.00 The total number of 1969 Cougars produced was 100,085 of which 5,796 were convertibles. To take this a little farther only 23 were built with 428 -4v Cobra Jet V8 Ram Air engines. 7 of those had the close ratio 4-speed manual transmissions, 2 of them were painted Dark Ivy Green Metallic and 1 of them had Medium Saddle Decor Bucket seats.
