Today’s bus originally thought to be the original Partridge Family bus by Anthony Maggio who I know was laughing as he sent it and is credited with sharing this bus. This made me think what was the Partridge Family bus. It was a 1959 Chevrolet (see photo at the end).
Today’s bus is a 1959 Crown Supercoach which was a mid engine configuration. The Crown Supercoach was know as the Cadillac of school buses. In 1954, Crown produced their first diesel-powered school bus, introducing the 743 cubic-inch Cummins as an option. For school districts with growing student populations, Crown introduced a tandem rear-axle Supercoach in 1955. Expanding the seating capacity from 79 to 91 (with a later option for 97), this would become the highest-capacity school bus ever mass-produced. In the day you would pay $130,000.00 for these buses, about $30,000.00 more than for other makes of school buses. These buses were used in the Long Beach Unified School District until the AQMD declared their death on Dec. 31, 2017.
