Use the “baggie test” to see if the paint surface is contaminated. Simply put your hand in a plastic bag and rub along a cleaned surface. If you feel the surface is rough, it’s time to clay. Use after washing your car with plenty of clay lube. Many people use detail spray or rinse-less wash instead.
I always polish after using clay as clay can cause minor marring on the paint. A freshly clayed and polished finish will bring out the best shine and gloss.
