Last updated on January 28, 2025

Today’s car is a 1972 Mustang Sprint “Cherry Blossom” Convertible Edition owned by the second owner Rex Turner. I photographed this car at The Marina del Rey Cars and Coffee located at 4724 1/2 Admiralty Way, Marina Del Rey, CA. The car is finished in classic white, with blue panels and red pin striping with a color matching knitted vinyl seat trim interior. It is powered by a 140 hp, 302 cu in, V8 engine, with a Motorcraft 2-barrel carburetor mated to a Cruise-O-Matic 3-speed automatic transmission with 2.79:1 rear axle. Slowing this baby down are power disc brakes in the front and drums in the rear. The independent front suspension consist of coil springs, motor craft shock absorbers, and a link type stabilizer. The rear suspension is asymmetrical variable-rate design consist of a semi floating rear axle, longitudinally mounted semi-elliptical leaf springs and motor craft shock absorbers.

The limited Sprint addition was available in Pinto, Maverick, Mustang models. The limited edition Sprint was popular, with 9,383 Mustangs sold, but was only offered in the hardtop and sports-roof versions of the Mustang. One of the more limited-edition Mustangs ever produced was the 1972 Mustang Sprint convertibles which was a special request from the Washington DC Ford dealers for use in the 1972 Cherry Blossom Parade. All 50 cars came with a 302 cu in engine, automatic transmission, AM radio, deluxe interior and power disc brakes, color keyed front bumper, color keyed tail panel with accent stripe and all 50 Mustang Sprint Convertibles were built identical. At the conclusion of the Cherry Blossom festivities, the 50 cars were distributed to local Ford dealers, who then offered them for sale.

The first generation Mustangs were built from 1964 1/2 – 1973 with the total number 2,981,259 produced. Of those 125,405 were 1972’s Mustangs, of those 9,383 were Limited Edition Sprints and of those 50 were Cherry Blossoms Convertibles, 3086 Sportsroofs, and 6247 Coupes. The MSRP was $ 3272.22 amount. The published top speed of 111 mph with a 0-60 mph time of 11.0 seconds. This limited production car is a great piece of Mustang history. What a great car to take to a Mustang or FOMOCO car shows, local car shows, Cars and Coffee events or just a cruising with a smile on your face in a local parade. Thank you for riding along. Frank
